The River-Friendly Green Gardener at Home program is a 10-week gardening seminar series for homeowners that want their yard to have it all. Discover how you can have a water-wise, healthy, beautiful, and pest free garden and landscape. Learn from the experts who have been doing just that for years as they share many of their tips and secrets. Learn all the dirt about soil health, compost, mulch, fertilization, native and drought-tolerant plants, keeping water on site, irrigation, edible landscaping/gardening, lawn care, landscape design, integrated and organic pest management and so much more. Among the distinguished instructors is organic horticultural professional Steven Zien with Living Resources Company who will provide instruction and humor making his Soils, Fertilizer/Turf Care, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) classes both highly educational and surprisingly entertaining.
The course fee is only $55 for Roseville residents and $65 for non-residents, a real deal for 20 hours of quality instruction. The first of three modules of the River-Friendly Green Gardener Training Program For Horticultural Professionals offered by EcoLandscape California/ReScape California and will cover Building & Maintaining Healthy Soil as well as Turf Care. A healthy living soil is the key to beautiful, drought and pest resistant landscapes. Explore the wonders of Soil Food Web, how it works with your plants and techniques to encourage the assistance of this diverse population of plant friendlies. Unearth what fertilizers will encourage a healthy and diverse Soil Food Web as well as what fertilizers you need to avoid and why. Realize the differences between mulch and compost and how to best utilize each.
Soils expert and organic horticultural professional Steven Zien with Living Resources Company will educate and entertain you in his Introduction to Soil Science and Fertilizer and Turf Care classes.
This first Green Gardener Training Module is a must for any horticultural professional with the desire to improve their skills, maximize their time and labor efficiency, increase profits, stay ahead of the competition, while providing superior, environmentally friendly horticultural services to your clients. This River-Friendly Green Gardener half day course, Integrated Pest Management II: An Advanced Perspective is back by popular demand. The instructor Steven Zien (IPM Advocate, DPR IPM Innovator, licensed pesticide applicator, organic pest management expert) with Living Resources Company will take you beyond the basics to discuss landscape pest identification (including new species arriving in California), key strategies to prevent pests, and management options from cultural controls to pesticides.
The seminar will focus on Holistic Pest Management, which acknowledges that plants and their pests function in a shared ecological system. Participants will learn how to keep this system in balance and discourage pests before they get out of hand. Since not all pest problems are pest related, know how to treat the cause of the problem instead of the symptoms will be examined. Solutions to eliminate intolerable pest problems with effective, environmentally-friendly management practices will be offered, including the latest eco-friendly products and how best to use them.
Each attendee with receive a copy of Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs 3rd Edition and a 20x magnifying hand lens with LED lights to aid in pest identification. The best online and printed resources available with be shared to assist participants in their work.
The class will be held at the La Sierra Community Center, 5325 Engle Road in Carmichael California. If you are unable to attend this class it will be re-offered on Thursday evening June 14 from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the Folsom Community Center, 52 Natoma Street, Folsom, California.
